I am looking to update and upgrade my system's lights. Its a 38 gallon tank, and I intend to turn it into a reef tank. I also need to keep to a budget and want to keep things fairly simple. I'm considering a t5 fixture for this purpose and would like some advice on brands, intensity, etc.

I am also in need of a new skimmer. I am not running an external sump, so the skimmer would have to be the hang-on-the-back type. As with the lighting, I want to keep things simple and reasonably priced. Some advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Budget lighting is never very good. I would look for a 4 bulb t5 fixture for your tank. ATI and TEK are higher end fixtures but go with a nova extreme if you can't afford those. The bulbs you use are extremely important and ATI are the best. You can check Reefgeek.com for ATI bulbs. They aren't cheap, but nothing in this hobby is.

As for skimmer, a remora hob skimmer with maxijet 1200 would fit your tank nicely.
