I'm excited for this, it has been under renovation for a long time. Loved going here as a kid.

Oops...typo city on thread title....mods can you change that it won't let me. Should be Academy, not acamedy :)

25' deep tank, 212,000 gallons, 3000 fish, and Charles Delbeek running the show...doesn't get much better than that.

Got my confirmation letter of membership in the mail today...not set date(s) for the early membership opening but it says they will be in the fall. Membership cards should be coming soon. Say's they are planting over 2,000 colonies in the reef tank.

Man I'm so excited! The guy who runs this place won the MACNA person of the year award and I met one of the Marine Biologists in Atlanta as well. Its going to be SWEET.

One of my good friends that I grew up with had a chance to take his kids to a sneak peek yesterday since they paid for a membership. He said they had a great time. He said the aquarium section was definitely not as big as Monterey....obviously it isn't just an aquarium and I'm not expecting that but sounds like they have a very cool reef tank. He snapped a couple pics that I'm attaching...very cool albino alligator. Enjoy

Visited the Academy on Thursday. It is fantastic! I'm sharing a few photos...the giant reef tank is amazing, but will need time for the corals to develop.

OMG Howwwww jealous I am...you just slipped away and went huh?

I was worried that the reef tank was going to need time to grow. Did you go to the planetarium too? How was the rainforest?

Took a last-minute trip for work, and got to spend half a day at the Academy. The rain forest was really cool. It has a deep aquarium at the base of the exhibit, with some giant catfish and an underwater viewing tunnel. Guests walk up a circular platform (like the Guggenheim museum) from one level to the next, and they have set up a bunch of freshwater tanks and terrariums on each of the levels. You can see butterflies near the top. Missed the planetarium, but spent some time at the climate change exhibit.

Ok, so I finally made my first trip to the Cal Academy of Science while visiting my fam this weekend. I definitely suggest visiting on a weekday and not during a holiday, it was very crowded but I still was able to see quite a bit. I'll be back for sure since I'm a member.

Yes, the albino aligator is very cool

They are starting to have a bryopsis issue also...hopefully one of the gazillion tangs will eat it.
