ok, so we just moved into this apartment, and i brought my 10G and 26G nanos with me, but of course with a student budget, we can't really afford to keep the a/c on. i never really knew how much my parents' constant a/c use helped keep the tanks cool, until now! yesterday the temps both rose to 84, today it's 85,:hissyfit: im worried this is going to keep up, especially with mid-summer only a month or two away. i dont have extra money to spend, especially after getting this new place, but im afraid a chiller is the only way to go. i have been puting ice in the tanks but i know this is only a temp. thing, its a delicate dance to not have the temp drop to much too quickly, but even so, after the ice is gone, the temp shoots back up again. i hope theres another solution but i think thats just me hoping not to empty my savings, or lose the tanks. Does anyone have any suggestions, on a small and VERY affordable chiller. i dont have sumps, so im thinking i need an in-line. Also my 10G, seems kinda much to have a chiller on something so small, however i will do what it takes to keep my babies!
a fan will probably bring that down a degree or two..
some people ive read have froze ro/di water and placed it in the tank....or you can use ice packs i suppose as a cheap alternative.
the used section on sdr might be a great place to look too.
edit..oops just reread and youre already doing the ice trick

be careful with the ice, you don't want to melt too much fresh water in your tanks. the way to go is freeze 2-liters or 20oz bottles of water and float those. A small fan blowing over the top of the water will help to... Just keep an eye on your salinity, it will evap quicker. Lastly switch your light cycle to turn on at 7pm til 5am or something... It will be cooler at night to run the lights. And that is about all i know you can do without buying a chiller.
It should work if you keep up with it

yeah im not too worried about adding extra F.W. to the tank, im already having a battle with the evaporation, but i like the frozen bottle thing, cuz im not really sure wuts in that ice, i was unsure about letting it contaminate my water, thanks for your help guys

Yeah if you are just using regular ice, its like pouring untreated tap water in your tank, metals, chlorine, etc all getting in your tank.

Fans work real well, but then again I have the AC set from 76-78 degrees on a daily basis.
