And so it begins... the merging of "Tales of the Bedroom 90" with the new custom 150 in Temecula, CA.

I'm moving my tank and up to Temecula and upgrading to a 150 in the process.

Tank:
Custom build by Charlie @ www.fishtankfactory.com
Glass (not drilled) 48"L x 30"W x 24"H
Rimless, 1/2" regular glass, Polished edges

Stand aka "The Beast":
Built by Dave @ Mitchell Construction (davocean)
49"L x 31"W x 31"H
2x4 construction to be faced later. This thing is a tank (as in the army kind with a big gun...the run over you and squish you like a bug kind) A++++ on the construction. As Dave so perfectly put it, "Glued, Screwed, and Tattooed."

All Equipment will be transferred from the 90.

And the story begins...
I called Charlie and got a great quote from him for the tank. Literally 1/2 the cost Leemar wanted. So I ordered and gave him a deadline of the 26th of June which was only about two weeks from the day I called him. There was a chance it would have gotten done much earlier but he had jury duty, but I give him an A+ on communication through the whole build. He kept me up to date on when to expect it the whole time. I specifically ordered the tank just as it is. I wanted it without the trim at the top and polished on the edges. I couldn't afford Eurobracing, and I don't mind a center brace at all, so I ordered it with 18" openings so my equipment could fit in the openings perfectly and HOB. In then end, I picked up the tank on the 25th. I drove up to Alhembra, CA to the factory and got a pretty cool tour of the whole place up there. I'd highly recommend them for a stand or a tank. Really solid operation they have going on up there.

6/25/08 I drop off the tank in Temecula on the way down to SD.

6/26/08 Davocean begins work on the stand at his place and I go pick up 160lbs of sand and a big ol' bucket of Red Sea Coral Pro Salt. (Pics of the stand build from dave coming soon)

Dave finishes the stand about 5pm (Rome wasn't built in a day, but my "Beast" of a stand sure was) and we load it into my RAV4 ("Tonka") along with 8 empty jugs of water, 160lbs of sand, and a big ole bucket of salt. That truck has never failed me in fitting an enormous amount of stuff in it and still be able to close the back door.

We drive up to Temecula and my parents assist us with getting the tank in place in the final resting place, the new family room.

I make a run to the closest LFS Deep Sea Creatures on the 79 and fill up 50 gals of RO/DI water. Must give huge props to this store for having an AWESOME design and layout. I talked to the owner and I guess the store design was a design final for some student. It paid off. Nicest LFS I've ever been in. The livestock was sorely lacking, but that can always be fixed later. I'll have to go back and get pictures later.

Went back home, mixed up the first 50gals with Instant Ocean salt since that is what my animals are a custom to now, and put the sand to settle in that water overnight with a powerhead for circulation.

After a long day of work, I thought Dave at least deserved a beer or two and a burger... we ate way too much but had a nice wrap up to a hard day of work.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h114/JessyCat77/DSC02205.jpg

I'll be back tomorrow with another 50gals of water to mix and some LR and a skimmer.... the big move with the livestock is going to be Saturday.

Thanks MUST go out to:
Jon & Kai for moving my "non reef" stuff on Sunday
Jasper for babysitting my acans.
Paul for babysitting my ric garden.
Dave for building me my stand and helping me with the manual labor of the set up.
Jess for helping me with all the hunting down of sand and stuff
and of course my parents for letting my little beasties rest in their family room for a year or so til I can get my living arrangements to something permanent.

More to come...

so of course there was about a 4 gal spill because I was too tired to lift the jug properly, and then I slipped and fell...its been a loooooong day.

I had to take measures to clear up the tank for the new inhabitants tomorrow. So in goes the filter sock I stole from Jess (thanks jess ;)) and my skimmer...

WHICH I BROKE!!!!!! UGH can anything else go wrong?!

OH WAIT YES it can!!

My rainsford goby decided to hitchhike in the rock I transferred and I found him dead in the bottom of the bucket. :( WAAAAAAAAAAAA... :hissyfit:

wooohoo.. finally got off my lazy but and pulled my TEK fixture off the tank to switch out all the bulbs and clean the reflectors.

When I got this fixture the bulbs were used for some small unknown amount of time, I've used them all for a year so I thought it was time to switch out.

Old set up:

1- giesemann Actinic+
2- Purple 420nm no label left on bulb
3- UV Purple 420nm
4- giesemann Actinic+
5- giesemann Aquablue+
6- giesemann Actinic+
7- giesemann Actinic+
8- Purple 420nm no label left on bulb

New set up yet to be determined... I'll post up the bulbs I have available to me and you can help me decide.

Jessy
09-26-2008, 01:15 PM
Ok so here is the extensive list of bulbs I have in my hands right now to choose from.

Unknown Life- Probably less than 3 months
1 giesemann Aquablue+

Used 2 months at most
giesemann Actinic+
D+D AQ Pure Actinic <---- maybe purple? Haven't plugged it in to know
3 x ATI Blue Plus
4 x Current Actinic
UV Lighting Aquasun

Brand new never used-
ATI AquaBlue Special
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Pro Color
ATI Actinic

I know I want one of those purple bulbs in my fixture so unless one of these listed is 420nm I may just have to use one of the old ones again til I get a new one. My problem is I have no idea what all these spectrum and names mean. I know that 460 is your basic blue and 420 is your purple. I know what the 10K, 12K, 14K, and 20K "white" bulbs are too for MH.... can anyone help me identify the color and/or temperature of these bulbs....

and then offer your opinion of the best mix of them to get the best brands/par and color

alright beginning to answer my own questions one by one
http://www.theaquariumsolution.com/files/imagecache/yourcontentnode_mainimage/files/products/Aquablue%20Plus.JPG

Features:

* T-5 Diameter High Output Fluorescent Lamp
* 60% Actinic 40% white spectrum
* Color temperature Approx 11,000K Crisp color as stand-alone lamp

Information:
This lamp is ideally suited to be used as a standalone, or when used in a 2:1 or 3:1 fashion with blue or actinic supplementary lamps.

* Type: Aqua Blue +
* Watt: 54
* Size (approx): 48"
* Kelvin Temp: 11,000K

So This one is the "white" with a blue tinge

http://www.theaquariumsolution.com/files/imagecache/yourcontentnode_mainimage/files/products/Actinic%20plus.jpg

Features:

* T-5 Diameter High Output Lamp
* Blue Spectrum Peaks at 450 nm
* Supplementation Lamp encourages blueing in SPS coral, minor fluorescing.

Recommendations:
Great when used with 10k or 6500k metal halide lamps to encourage bluing in SPS. 450nm peak is similar to Radium Blue metal halide lamps. Other preferred ratios include 1:1 with Sun Lamps, or 2:1:1 Sun/Blue/Actinic for best blend of bluing and fluorescence.

* Type: Actinic+
* Watt: 54
* Size (approx): 48"
* Kelvin Temp: Blue

Jessy
09-26-2008, 01:43 PM
http://www.marinedepot.com/IMD/lighting_uri_aquasun.jpg

* 10000° Kelvin Temperature
* Best used for fresh & saltwater tanks adding vital photosynthesis
* Unique blend of tri-band phosphors & high color rendering
* Useful life: 4500 hours.

Review from Marine Depot-
"It's not really a white light it lights up with a lavander color. However it does provide a good spectrum. So far I haven't had any problem with my corals adjust. I'm assuming the 12000k is the white light by this manufacturer."

Taken with my webcam on Thursday after I changed out the bulbs. Its a mirror image video, but at least you can see what the tank looks like now. I've got a big issue with bubble algae but nothing I can't take care of.

Have I said how much I'm loving my fish lately? I feel like i've got a perfect mix, minus the square spot anthia i'm debating on getting.

:hissyfit::hissyfit::hissyfit: Red Scooter Blenny wanted to live life as a fish chip and jumped out of my tank.

All my fish have been super jumpy and weird since I changed the lights on the fixture. My yellow wrasse jumped and hit my mom in the arm, the blue hippo hit the net tank top twice, and then the deceased red scooter... :huh:

You recently saw my tank, with its 6 T5HO. It has:

(2) ATI Blue Plus
ATI Special Blue
ATI Pro Color
UVL Super Actinic
UVL AquaSun

I am truly impressed the ATI Blue Plus bulbs. The Pro Color is also fantastic. Also am very pleased with the AquaSun. No complaints about the Super Actinic, but not thrilled either.

The ATI Special Blue seems to be comparatively weak in output compared to the other bulbs - quite a bit dimmer in fact, but I suspect that my particular bulb is bad. I plan to replace it.

RAWR..Just got back up to the tank after a long weekend and its so sad. The male mandarin when I got him in the tank the tail was shredded a bit. I didn't notice it at the store, so i thought maybe it happened in transport. Well I get home and I notice he's not bouncing around the tank like the female so I pull up a chair and watch him. After about 20 minutes he gets up and he's got NO TAIL FIN. Sigh... I think he's got ich too because his skin looks a little lumpy like pre stage ich. I hope this little guy makes it. I tested my water and the NO3 is about 20+ its hard to tell..but its weird that I do 32 gal water changes on a 150 every 2 weeks and the Nitrates are still high. I've just brought in a larger 45 gal bin to do larger water changes...I'll keep you posted on if it works.

I just added a double stuffed bottle of Tigger Pods to the rocks while the lights were out, and another double stuffed bottle to the fuge. That's at least 5,000 pods in the tank now. I also bought 100 live mysid shrimp to start my culture back in my fuge that I lost from the move. They are my favorite things to watch.

Hopefully the male will make it through with enough food and love because I have no hope for him to make it in a QT system with no food source.

I got my order of Reef Nutrition food in this weekend. One huge bottle of Phyto Feast Live, a big bottle of Arcti Pods and those two bottles of Tigger Pods. I squirted some of the arctipods in the tank and everyone (not the mandarins yet) came out to gorge. The anthias especially liked them. They have been spitting out their food alot lately.

Weird, I've noticed that my acans haven't been lookin all that great and so I finally got around to checking out my alk...it was really low... 2.0 meq/l. So I dosed it up with a little part A of Bionic but I'm going to do a 45 gallon water change tomorrow. I just hope the higher alk doesn't shock everything. Man I've never had a low alk problem in my tank before. I used to use IO salt, but now on this 150 I've been using Red Sea Coral Pro. Do you think the drop in alk is more likely because I've got these massive pieces of SPS that I've never had before or do you think it could be something else? What causes alk to drop in a system?

When I was using Red Sea Coral Pro I had to dose a whole lot more. My CA and ALK dropped as well. It was just more cost effective for me to go back and use Tropic Marin Pro because I didnt have to dose.

Well that's not a really good reason for me...in my thinking if it is dropping its because the corals are growing and using it up faster now. no?

Which is a good thing?

The more corals with skeletons you have in the tank, and the more they grow, the more alk and ca additions you will need to make, regardless of salt you use.

You're gonna have to set up a dosing scheme for your tank with a two part or something similar. I wouldn't use a ca reactor since you are not there enough to dial it in or correct a problem.

Just tested everything again.

Alk 2.3meq/ 6.44 dkh
Ph - 8.0
Ca- 420
Phosphate- .10
Mag- 1260

I need to raise the mag and the alk is up a little from last night thanks to part one of b-ionic

I don't think i can use calk because it doesn't dissolve in a 1 gallon jug outside the tank. There is still a lot of precipitate in the bottom of the jug. And I don't want that to burn my corals if I drop it right in on them. I'd use it if you can find a way for me to introduce it into the tank.

Hi Jess,

How long have you had the rainfords? I had one but it died after three days. It looked very healthy even when dead, no lesions or signs of fungal or bacterial infection. I have read they do not do well in captivity or in the absence of green hair algae.

And a FTS with the new piece.. I kinda want to move it over a bit but that would require epoxy...and right now its just resting nicely where its at

And here is my new green coris loving life in the new tank... Picasso my solar wrasse decided to go to sleep early I think he was tuckered out.

Ok, so I called the store owner to get in contact with the original owner of this coral. The LFS said that they talked to the original owner at length about how he originally paid $100 per inch for the frag. I requested contact info of the original owner to get lineage so I don't have to feel conflicted about calling it what it is ever again.

I'm feeling better about calling it the Red Robin but I'll wait til I can get some lineage info

This is the "lava flow" chalice and looks exactly like mine to me... its just my picture isn't as good. The dark spots are the same color as are the red spots.

The colors aren't exactly spot on but you get the general Idea. Since I'm on a mac for some reason everytime I transfer files from photoshop or lightroom onto photobucket or some other web program the colors always look different. So I can't make them look like i really see them which is much more vivid then this.

How do your green and yellow wrasse get along?

None of my wrasses even bother each other. They live independently of each other.

The solar wrasse committed suicide last weekend.
