View Full Version : Scripps to non-Scripps water?
Hey Guys,
I've had my tank on Scripps water for an entire year now. Its been great! However this month has been pretty crazy for me, and I haven't gotten down to Scripps to get more water. When I am able to, its either raining, or a few days before the rain so I can't get the water. My poor tank needs a water change BADLY!
Has anyone had issues with mixing non-scripps water with a tank that has scripps water?

you shouldn't have any issues. saltwater is saltwater. if anything the mix will be a nice boost of some stuff scripps is "low" on. i know a couple people that often do every 3rd water change or so with mix instead of scripps.

I don't think you'll have issues but you will notice a change. IMO consistency matters, and your tank will notice the change. I'm not saying that it will react badly, I'm just saying expect things to look weird at first. Just make sure you're using RO/DI water.
And just don't use Oceanic salt.... you're just asking for trouble if you do that.

Hey Jessy,
Why not use Oceanic salt? That's the salt that Aquatic Warhouse recommended to me when I bought my tank a year ago. Any salt you recommend?

My personal experience and that of Jasper down in south bay is that Oceanic sucks really bad. I tried one jug of it and it almost crashed my tank. I got crazy reading and algae like nuts. Never ever ever again will I ever use it.
Jasper says the same.
I'll recommend from personal use, Red Sea Coral pro salt and Instant Ocean. Ron at OG sells I.O. the cheapest around I think. AW doesn't always give the best information about the stuff they sell...one of the guys there also told me that my reef would die if I wasn't dosing this Reef trace stuff with stronium and other elements. He literally said, "OMG your tank is 4 months old and you haven't dosed this yet! I'm surprised its not dead!" Needless to say I bought and never even used 1/3 of it.....my reef is over a year and a half old without ever dosing that.
Do you think they're going to tell you NOT to buy the only salt they sell in their store?
*sigh* This wouldn't be the first time AW has given me shoddy information. Well I am glad you me this before I started using the big jug of Oceanic salt that I bought from them a while back. My tank may be kinda blah, but I still would not be cool with a crash whatsoever.
Thanks Jess. :)

Sweet, thanks Jonathan. I appreciate it. :)

Just so you know, Oceanic is not the only salt they sell. They sell several different brands of salt. As far as whether or not to use Oceanic, that's up to you. I would not ignore Jessy or Jasper's experiences, but I am sure that not everyone has had bad experiences with Oceanic.
As far as mixing up Scripps and mix, I don't see a problem. I do it all the time with no ill effects. I also use Scripps water that I have picked up before, during, and right after the rain. It simply does not matter.
